Doormen: What Do They Do?
The doorman role varies depending upon the property, from one of security and status, to one of concierge and hospitality ambassador. While some buildings use the terms ''doorman" and ''concierge" almost interchangeably, technically they are distinct complimentary functions.
What's the difference between a concierge and a doorman?
A concierge's job is often less physical and more planning-oriented. They usually sit behind a desk in the lobby; they can recommend a restaurant, get you tickets to events and make travel plans.
A contemporary doorman’s duties generally entail the following, they:
- Hold the door and greet you with a smile
- Sign for or assist with packages
- Supply or assist with luggage carts
- Accept food deliveries
- Hail taxis
- Set up move-in and move-out times
- Register residents’ guests
- Ensure building safety and security
- Serve as resident liaisons to building management
Still, it's not uncommon for the roles to become blurred, especially in smaller buildings.
